When I first met Emily Kvancz, owner of Santa Barbara Hair and Makeup, almost two years ago, I felt like we had known each other for years. Maybe it was our Midwest youth or our shared love for great home and kitchen style, but it was an immediate connection and one that is still strong today.
Even though Emily has a few quirky ways (like her adoration of red bull and flicking her used contacts randomly around her house), she has a special gift for putting a bride at ease and bringing your beauty dreams to life. Which is why I truly believe Emily is the fairy godmother of hair and makeup (well a hotter and younger version of course). It is also why I trusted her to do her magic on my face and hair for my wedding day!
And it is no wonder that Emily makes it look so easy since she has over 16 years of experience in the industry! She started her journey in 2000, when she joined Smashbox Cosmetics as a makeup artist fresh out of college. In 2005 she decided to branch-out on her own to do makeup in other areas, such as weddings, commercials, fashion shows and more. Along the way, she learned how to re-create chic hairstyles and added this to her professional palette.

IN A FEW WORDS DESCRIBE WHAT YOU LOVE BEST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I would honestly do it FOR FREE. Unfortunately, we have to pay the mortgage! But seriously, empowering women by making them feel beautiful from the inside out, is my schitck. I make them feel comfortable in their own skin, ask them how they would like me to do their hair and makeup, but really listen to them, instead of making them look like someone they don't recognize. When I've done a good job, she smiles a knowing smile and looks at me, "wow, I look beautiful".
When I walk away from a wedding, I am absolutely filled with light and gratitude from being able to make women feel beautiful... for a living. I'm downright giddy after most weddings.
WHAT 2-3 TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER LADY BOSSES?
- If you work from home, let the housework go for the time you start working, until the time you're finished working. We all juggle responsibilities, but don't let housework stress you out and make you feel like you're trapped and can't work until it's done.
- I'm just getting back into healthy habits after a 2-year lapse. Exercise is very important! Schedule it into your day and make it a priority.
- Don't let ANYONE make you feel like you can't fulfill your dreams of being self-made. If you have not already had, you will have: haters, people jealous of you, people really close to you who don't believe in you. Believe in yourself and never doubt yourself for a second.
HOW WOULD YOUR LIFE TASTE AND WHY?
My life would taste like vanilla, oud wood, maybe a little patchouli, rich and earthy, deep and full of soul. If I were a flavor of ice cream, I'd be pistachio with ribbons of caramel, toasted hazelnuts, and topped with a balsamic reduction sauce.
